With the rising popularity of yoga, instructional books abound and choosing the right one can be a daunting task. MacGregor follows up her memoir (Sacred Fire: My Journey into Ashtanga Yoga) with this inspiring guide. Beginners will relate to the author's initial frustrations, struggles with the poses, and feelings of self-doubt. Detailed instruction is given on how to overcome these obstacles and develop a daily practice of the eight limbs of Ashtanga yoga. MacGregor explains how to practice asanas six days a week using the Tristana Method, a threefold approach consisting of breathing technique (Ujjayi Pranayama), single-pointed gaze (Drishti), and pose. She also discusses the importance of the Ashtanga yoga diet and argues that, inevitably, foods that are harmful to the body impede yoga practice. Ayurvedic guidelines and methods for cleansing the body are given. MacGregor introduces the spiritual philosophy of yoga that moves the practice beyond a series of stretches while also providing written and photographic instruction on executing postures.
VERDICT This book is a must-have for all yoga enthusiasts. It provides valuable information for a complete practice on all levels. The author is well versed in Ashtanga and has the distinction of receiving certification to teach it from founder Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. An engaging and highly recommended read.
