Philosopher, theologian, and writer Rabbi Lord Sacks (1948–2020) has bequeathed to a fractious world snippets of calm wisdom and thoughtful faith. This collection includes selected short pieces published as a “Thought for the Day,” and there are various articles, speeches before the House of Lords, and other public lectures. Perhaps the most personal and poignant is the section titled “Credo.” These, it would seem, provide the heart and soul of one who sought to make the divine present in a ravaged and often brutally divided world. There are some heavy observations in the book as well as whimsical ones.
VERDICT Sacks, a sage, never fails to impart an accessible, yet deeply sagacious insight into the modern struggle for a life of meaning and purpose. A valuable list of his published works completes this collection.
