Jules Clement was a child when his father, a sheriff in Blue Deer, MT, was murdered. Now, nearly 30 years later, Patrick Bell, the killer, is in prison, but Jules’s mother wants him to find out more about the case. As he does so, Jules also juggles caring for his new baby, unraveling a perplexing archaeological problem, and solving border disputes with his new neighbors. A troubling rash of suicides, murders, and mysterious Russian incursions, plus the discovery of multiple historic cemetery sites (including one at his new house) complicate his efforts. The stories told by Patrick Bell and his family members just don’t add up, but Jules is determined to get to the truth. Harrison’s fifth Jules Clement book(following
Blue Deer Thaw, published in 2000) is both a riveting mystery and a satisfyingly complex character study. Justice Price narrates, capturing the essence of a sleep-deprived new parent trying to help family and neighbors while working for a living. Listeners will appreciate Price’s wide variety of voices and accents, which help to distinguish Harrison’s dizzying array of characters.
VERDICT While listeners may be glad they don’t live in Blue Deer, they will surely enjoy this twisty, precisely engineered tale.
