Everhart (The Moonshiner’s Daughter) returns to the South in this novel. The soft Southern accent and even, subtle tones of narrator Amy Melissa Bentley give life to the voices of the characters inhabiting this novel, which interrogates the brutality of a turpentine camp. It’s 1932 when Rae, pretending to be a man, and Del meet while both are tapping pine trees in the camp. They both run afoul of Crow, a sadistic boss who has them placed in a hot box, nearly killing them. When Rae’s identity is discovered, Del, Rae, and the abused wife of the camp commissary owner flee one night and escape to a better life on land that has been in Del’s family for several generations.
VERDICT Recommended for libraries that collect in the areas of historical and Southern fiction. There are some disturbing abuse scenes.
