Because the letter could establish that in Elizabethan times there really was a group of men called the School of Night (a term taken from Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost) who met to discuss God, politics, and the black arts. Bayard, who's successfully looked to the past in his last few novels, here adds a neat supernatural touch; good for all historical fiction collections.
