The Stuff That Never Happened

Annabelle and Grant have been married for decades. They have two adult children, and Annabelle enjoys illustrating children's books, while Grant is a professor focusing on labor issues. Grant is so obsessed with his job and a book he's writing that Annabelle feels pushed aside much of the time, even though she knows Grant loves her in his own way. Their marriage also has an elephant in the room. Twenty-six years ago, when they were first married, Annabelle fell in love with one of Grant's colleagues, and although she and Grant agreed never to mention the affair, Annabelle has never forgotten her joy with Jeremiah. When her pregnant daughter, Sophie, has to go on bed rest, Annabelle goes to New York to stay with her, and she runs into Jeremiah on the street.
