Singapore author Yang's "Tensorate" series, which is comprised of three novellas, is an inventive silk-punk entry set on the planet Ea with magic, monsters, and rebel Machinists. In this world, everyone is born genderless until they choose (usually between the ages of three and 17). The Black Tides of Heaven is a coming-of-age story of twins Akeha and Mokoya, spanning some 40 years. Mokoya and her grief over her dead daughter drive The Red Threads of Fortune, which is more of an adventure and monster-hunting story. The faster-paced The Descent of Monsters is told via letters, reports, and journal entries relating to an official investigation. Nancy Wu brings a clear narration to these stories of love, sexual identity, grief, and power.
