The second in Larkwood’s duology (following
The Unspoken Name) is a lush, emotional journey of politics, gods, and relationships. Csorwe, Shuthmili, and Tal left the wizard Belthandros Sethennai two years ago, and now scrape out a living by helping survey the decaying remains of the lost Echentyr: giant serpents who conquered worlds in the name of their goddess, Iriskavaal. The chance discovery of a lost hatchery releases Cherenthisse, an Echetyri warrior who was frozen in time for over 3,000 years, and begins a cascade of events that reopen a conflict not seen in centuries. Shuthmili will do anything to protect her lover Csorwe, even if that means sacrificing herself to her goddess, Zinandour. Tal’s own world of Tlaanthothe is struggling as Sethennai has disappeared, and while Tal would rather hide from responsibility—and his former lover—the encroaching conflict will pull him into a fight to survive, because the Lady of the Thousand Eyes is waking and ready to take over the worlds again.
VERDICT Highly recommended for readers who want strong character arcs, incredible worldbuilding, and high-stakes action.
