DEBUT Ember is trying to achieve some stability in her life. Tired of working in a run-down bowling alley for poverty wages, she aspires to get a salaried job in an office. But when her applications keep being ignored, she decides to get creative and lie about her level of education and her ethnicity. Her strategy proves successful: when she submits an application that identifies her as white rather than Indigenous and claims she possesses an accounting degree, she promptly lands her dream job. But now Ember can’t stop lying, not even when she meets Danuwoa, the hot IT guy at the office, whom she immediately falls for. He seems to like her too, but fraternization violates company policy, and Ember can’t risk losing her job and the security it affords her. Struggling to keep up with corporate culture, forced to endure racist microaggressions, and denying her growing love for Danuwoa prove to be challenging. It all becomes insurmountable when Ember falls victim to a blackmailer who threatens to reveal her lies.
VERDICT With relatable storylines about identity, family, and self-worth and endearing characters, this steamy rom-com is a strong debut and a must-have for romance collections.
