Together, Harrison (
Demons of Good and Evil) and narrator Marguerite Gavin create the quintessential 2000s urban fantasy voice. Petra Grady is snarky and blunt, and doesn’t see the need for makeup, hollow niceties, or classist nonsense. And she is subjected to plenty, as her job is cleaning “dross”—the waste products of magic use that bring bad luck to anyone it touches. Many magic users view her as an untalented garbage collector even though her job is necessary to keep them safe and invisible from the nonmagical majority. But after her immensely mystically talented childhood crush-turned-nemesis coerces her into joining his research project, a great tragedy sends her on the run with him, her friends, and her dog. As they struggle to understand what happened, Petra must learn when her loyalty is misplaced. In addition to perfectly embodying Petra’s voice, Gavin guides listeners through intricate worldbuilding, particularly around the workings of the magical system. She expertly portrays secondary characters as well, including one of Petra’s companions, a scientist whose crush makes him prone to seek out her opinion regardless of her ire toward him.
VERDICT Listeners ready for the next wave of urban fantasy will enjoy this series starter.
