In Flynn’s latest thriller (following
The Girls Are All So Nice Here), a honeymoon should be the beginning of married life, but for June, it starts a downward spiral. Josh decides to take a quick swim before engaging in their evening plans, and he never returns. It appears that he has drowned, and his body was swept out to sea. Ten years later, June is engaged to Kyle and eagerly planning the wedding. But she still can’t move past Josh and what happened to him. When she thinks she spots Josh in a park, she begins to doubt herself. Did she just imagine it, or is her husband still alive? Then she discovers a winery in Napa with an owner who looks exactly like Josh, so she makes an excuse to Kyle and flies to the region seeking the truth. But some truths should stay buried.
VERDICT Flynn weaves a terrific tale that could easily get complicated and dubious, but she adeptly keeps everything straightforward and believable. When readers figure out a piece of the puzzle, Flynn introduces other elements to keep the pace and story continuously surprising. Pair this with First Lie Wins by Ashley Elston for the perfect book club discussion.
