Garden designer Pearson’s (
Natural Selection: A Year in the Garden) story begins nearly 30 years ago when Mitsushige Hayashi decided to make his newspaper business carbon neutral by acquiring the land where the park now sits. As we read, “In many ways Hayashi was ahead of his time and now, with our very real fears about the environment being played out in front of us, his ambition for the Millennium Forest to be ‘a garden for a thousand years’ could not be more fitting.” Equally impressive is the art of satoyama, or the balance in a landscape between man-made and natural elements. The “Plant Mixes” section is informative—what was planted, what was removed, and what was modified across 20 different mixes. The resource list is detailed, the index is helpful, and the book has beautiful full-color photos throughout.
VERDICT An excellent resource for the armchair gardener and the environmentally minded.
