Berry’s follow-up to
Northern Spy continues the story of former IRA informants Tessa and Marian Daly. The thriller gets off to a dramatic start, with Tessa being kidnapped and brutally beaten by IRA operatives. The sisters, who had settled into a comfortable life with their young children and new identities, are plunged back into danger. Tessa is blackmailed by her kidnappers into tracking down her former M15 handler and attempting to turn him into an IRA informant. Then Marian goes missing while on a hike, and the danger ramps up even more. Berry builds suspense, keeping listeners hooked with surprising plot twists, even as she explores the family’s complicated past. Narrator Katharine Lee McEwan skillfully portrays Tessa, Marian, and their mother, using believable voices to craft well-drawn, fully fleshed character portraits. McEwan is at her best as she conveys the strength of the sisters’ connection, together with the nail-biting rising tension.
VERDICT An excellent addition to any mystery or thriller section. Recommended for fans of other Irish writers such as Tana French, Claire McGowan, and Dervla McTiernan.
