Downing’s eighth John Russell story (following Wedding Station) finds journalist John Russell living in 1953 Los Angeles with his wife, actor Effi Koenen, and their daughter, Rosa. Once a double agent for the United States and the Soviet Union during World War II, John is now investigating American companies that conducted business with German companies during the war. When John discovers that the family is being followed, he’s not sure whether it’s because of the story he’s working on or because Beria, an enemy from his past, has surfaced. A trip to an international film festival in Berlin reveals the answers, but not before more complications arise and John becomes the target of a deadly attack. Downing weaves a web of intrigue and suspense, emphasizing the social upheaval of the time and touching on a range of issues, from the unsettling activities of HUAC to political unrest in East Germany. Simon Vance provides a steady narration, enhanced with appropriate accents and voices. His portrayal of Russell as a levelheaded and thoughtful character is excellent.
VERDICT For listeners who enjoy intricate spy thrillers laced with social commentary.
