Evans (
Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships) and Grossnick (
Dictionary of American Naval Aviation Squadrons), both naval historians, have coauthored this well-written edition to commemorate the 2010 centennial of U.S. naval aviation. The first volume is a two-column per page chronology of people, places, battles, space accomplishments, and a variety of other naval occurrences. Black-and-white photos appear on almost every page. Captions are complete and often dated. The table of contents divides the early chapters by historical periods such as "The Great Depression," while the later sections are separated by decades. The index lists aircraft by designation and by name, missiles and rockets, ships, military units, and individuals. Volume 2 is a more general history of naval aviation with topics such as aircraft, personnel, units, ships, deployments, and operations. The presentation consists of a mixture of text and charts.
VERDICT This set is a valuable resource for the serious student/researcher of U.S. naval history.
