DEBUT This first novel by Edgar and Emmy Award winner Zuckerman (a writer for TV shows
Law & Order and
Blue Bloods) is a well-plotted, intricate, and diverting thriller set in beautiful Geneva, Switzerland, where Harvard Business School graduates Majid and Catherine live and work in the hyper-competitive world of international finance. Their school chum (and Catherine’s former lover) Rafe unexpectedly reappears and reignites his relationship with Catherine, all while hiding his identity as an undercover agent investigating financial intelligence and global terrorism for the U.S. Treasury. The three MBAs each look the other way as they climb their respective ladders of success: Catherine by laundering money for a Detroit mobster, Majid by manipulating stock values for possible global terrorists, Rafe by ignoring the bedfellows he has made in his pursuit of the greater good. Before long, their respective clients become increasingly demanding, and the stories become intertwined.
VERDICT The chapters are unusually short, enabling Zuckerman to keep a lot of thematic balls in the air; he really hits his stride in his first time out, telling a story torn from the headlines with a quick-read focus.
