Abrams’s thriller debut introduces listeners to Avery Keene, a brilliant law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Howard Wynn, and the predicament he puts her into by naming her his power of attorney and guardian before succumbing to illness. Avery must solve his riddle, relying on her photographic memory, the sparse clues he leaves, Justice Wynn’s son, his personal attorney, and other pieces he has left strung across the internet. Abrams builds the tension as Avery races to put the pieces together. She fends off reporters, the FBI, Homeland Security, and those out to kill her and Wynn, all with the nation’s democracy at stake. Adenrele Ojo narrates expertly, weaving listeners through Abrams’s sharp dialogue with precision and depth, and moving the story along without rushing or sliding out of character from scene to scene. Ojo will keep listeners engaged and hooked into Abrams’s well-constructed story, so that even those who do not consider themselves fans of political or legal thrillers will anxiously wait to hear if Avery pulls all the threads together.
VERDICT This title is sure to be a hit with library users and is a recommended first purchase.
