Left destitute by the death of her careless, not too bright husband, Edwina Cheltham is relieved and surprised to be offered the position of secretary (a job usually held by a man) to the abrupt, overbearing Duke of Hadlow. But the logical, efficiency-focused duke cares nothing for convention. If a woman can be a better secretary than a man, he'll hire her and think nothing of it. At least that's his plan, until the attraction between them sparks out of control, and they are swept into a shadowy relationship that, if society has anything to say about it, won't end well.
VERDICT An intelligent, practical heroine who will do anything for her daughter and an arrogant, lonely hero finally give in to passion and, eventually, completely "illogical" love in a story made sweeter by the presence of a charming child and a wonderful lummox of a dog. Frampton (One-Eyed Dukes Are Wild) lives in Brooklyn.
