It's bad enough when Adam, Maggie's husband of 30 years, announces that he's leaving her for another woman. It's even worse when, after the divorce is final, he tells her that he'd never actually consummated the affair—he was just tired of being married to Maggie. She's well on her way to developing an alcohol problem, her kids are grown and don't need her as much, and she's working an awful part-time job. Maggie is stuck, and she knows that she needs to break the rut, so she goes by herself on the Roman holiday that she had planned jointly with Adam, and connects with a new friend who needs a house sitter in Michigan for six months. While there, she joins a support group for new divorcées and meets a new man, Charlie.
VERDICT This story has been told before, but Pagán (Forever Is the Worst Long Time) has created a winning character in Maggie. Watching her wake up to the world around her and realize that there's more to life than a dull marriage is exciting and relatable. Women's fiction readers will find a lot to like in this book.
