Wonder Woman Omnibus collects the first 24 issues and
Wonder Woman Annual of the rebooted title post-
Crisis on Infinite Earths. Through Pérez, Len Wein, and Greg Potter's reimagining, the collection highlights the mythology that shaped Diana and her purpose, her connection with the world outside Themyscira, and how she reconciles the ideals of both realms. Though issues are allotted to her learning about the modern world of man and interactions with familiar characters such as Etta Candy and Steven Trevor, a large focus is given to the Greek mythological aspects of the Amazon princess: the incessant meddling of the Pantheon, her gallery of villains, as well as the tribulations she faces that all stem from well-known myths. This concentration, as well as the admirably cohesive storytelling, offers the reader a better understanding of why Diana is truly a wonder. The sartorial choices of characters date the collection, but the intricacies in Pérez's art, as well as his consistency and well-proportioned figures, remain timeless and are a perfect match for the classical bent of the collection, which is counter to the stylistic approach in Brian Azzarello's (
Joker) recent run on the title that also incorporates mythology. Though Azzarello's mythology is more integrated into the world than is Pérez's interpretation, both offer a grand and divine picture of Wonder Woman. Both fans of mythology in comics and Wonder Woman readers will enjoy this long-awaited hardcover accompanied by short character profiles and an introduction by Pérez himself about the work. Fans of Pérez's art will delight in the cover gallery included.
VERDICT Carefully planned and beautifully illustrated, WW Omnibus showcases a great anthology of storytelling and collaborative efforts highlighting the majestic origins and beginnings of the iconic Amazon.
