With this debut novel, Kepnes becomes one of the best writers of obsessed, creepily self-absorbed, narcissistic stalker characters. Her protagonist, Joe Goldberg, appears initially as an attractive bookstore manager but slowly reveals his obsession with smart, sexy aspiring writer Guinevere Beck. Kepnes's writing has the push-pull of the repulsive and chilling personae in a compelling and relentless narrative. Much as listeners might cringe at some of the twists and turns, it's nearly impossible to stop. Santino Fontana's narration inhabits to perfection the disturbing character of Joe.
VERDICT Recommended for thriller collections. ["Kepnes certainly has the creepy factor down in her debut novel, taking readers deep into Joe's thoughts and feelings, to extremely suspenseful effect," read the review of the Emily Bestler: Atria hc, LJ 8/14.]
