Davis (
The Hard Tomorrow) offers an autobiographical travelogue of her experiences over the course of an eight-week, nearly 2,000-mile bicycle journey from her parent’s home in Tucson, AZ, to her own house in Athens, GA. She spends much of the trek trying to figure out why she’s undertaken such an arduous journey. Is the point is to have one last grand adventure before she and her husband start a family? Or is she hoping to snap out of a depressive rut that has sapped her inspiration? As she progresses across the southern states, Davis bears witness to the daily lives of strangers, makes small talk with fellow travelers, and marvels at the grandeur of natural rock formations. She pushes herself beyond exhaustion one day, only to thrill the next at discovering herself capable of physical feats beyond her own expectations. During the longest, loneliest legs of her trip, camped out beneath the desert stars, she is sometimes desolate with isolation, sometimes absolutely at peace.
VERDICT Davis evokes each episode of her long journey with perfectly chosen, keenly observed details and raw honesty, providing a sense of intimate insight into her life, mind, and creative process.
