Dan Foster has packed everything he needs for his long-awaited vacation from his “job” as a professional slacker, until unexpected events prove him to be woefully unprepared. With a beer in hand and his girlfriend at his side, Dan is staying at a luxury resort in paradise. When the sun explodes and the world descends into apocalypse, Dan, Mara, and a cast of quirky characters set out to survive the falling temperatures as cliques form and a desperate fight ensues for survival, supplies, and a chance to get off the island. Wassmer’s debut is a satirical, pop-culture-filled, hilarious take on the end of the world. Stephen R. Thorne shines as narrator, tackling many different dialects and accents that further enhance the story and set the stage and tone. His narration leads to plenty of laugh-out-loud moments and all the jokes land, even as the end of civilization looms large. This isn’t a thriller in the traditional sense, but the novel is undergirded by a sense of foreboding that will keep listeners hooked.
VERDICT This disaster novel is a lot more fun than one might think and will have listeners laughing along as they cheer on the survivors.
