(This story has been updated from an earlier version.) The New York-based
H.W. Wilson Foundation is continuing to support library and information science education with $580,000 in scholarship grants, to be distributed among 58 library schools across North America over the next four years. The grants, which were first announced in late December, will be distributed to schools starting this year, with the last group receiving grants in 2015. Each of the American Library Association (ALA)-accredited schools will receive $10,000 from the foundation. The schools may then distribute the funds according to its own scholarship rules and needs. The H.W. Wilson Foundation is an independent entity from the publisher
H.W. Wilson Company (which was
bought by EBSCO last year). Both the foundation and the company are among the funders of the separate John Cotton Dana Library Public Relations Awards; five of those awards, which includes a cash prize, were last given during last year's ALA Midwinter Meeting,
as LJ reported. Eight $10,000 grants will be awarded at the ALA Annual Conference in Anaheim, CA, in June. (Libraries may apply for the award
online via the EBSCO website until March 15.) This year, library schools at the following institutions will receive the H.W. Wilson Foundation grants:
- Catholic University of America, Washington, DC
- Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada
- Dominican University, River Forest, IL
- Drexel University, Philadelphia, PA
- Long Island University, Brookville, NY
- McGill University, Montréal, QC, Canada
- Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY
- Southern Connecticut State University, New Haven
- St. Catherine University, Saint Paul, MN
- State University of New York at Buffalo
- University of Kentucky, Lexington
- University of Michigan, Ann Arbor
- University of Toronto, ON, Canada
- University of Washington, Seattle
- University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee
(A complete list of schools slated to receive grants in 2013, 2014, and 2015 is available
here [PDF].)
