HathiTrust, the shared digital repository for research libraries, announced two new academic institutions as partners yesterday: Dartmouth College, and the Triangle Research Libraries Network (TRLN), a collaboration between Duke University, North Carolina State University, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and North Carolina Central University.
There has been a marked uptick in the number of institutions signing on with HathiTrust lately, with four joining in just over two months; Princeton University came aboard in September, and Yale University in August.
And yet, where once institutions joined with plans to bolster the HathiTrust archives with sizable deposits—the University of Michigan, for example, has deposited more than 4.1 million volumes since HathiTrust's October 2008 launch—some recent partners have signed on with more modest plans.
Long-term strategies
Dartmouth's dean of libraries, Jeffrey Horrell, told LJ that they have no immediate plans to store digital scans with the HathiTrust. But Dartmouth appears to be thinking long-term. "We see our partnership in the HathiTrust as part of our overall preservation and archiving strategy, including [digital archives] Portico and LOCKSS," he said.
Patti Pittman, an administrative assistant at TRLN, told LJ that the network would initially be storing an estimated 10,410 volumes, drawn from local and Internet Archive digitization projects, with more to come.
