Traveling in place was practiced and enjoyed as early as 1794 when Xavier de Maister published Voyage autour de ma chambre, an account of the 42-day "journey around his room." Stiegler is more interested in traveling as a state of mind than as physical activity. Readers will discern the ways in which this inner pursuit evolved with the invention of photography and has subtly affected modern life.
