Bangs (
The Art of Living Dangerously) describes remarkable places around the world, detailing the unique natural features and cultural attractions of destinations like Patagonia, Kilimanjaro, Sri Lanka, and Antarctica. Divided into sections by continent or region, the book gives a brief introduction to each destination as well as an activity level that ranges from “easy”—trips accessible to a wide range of ages and fitness levels—to “strenuous,” which includes trips that feature physical challenges such as roc- climbing, diving, or rafting. Bangs offers a daily itinerary for each location, from arrival to departure, providing details on specific trails, campsites, activities, and accommodations. The book is illustrated with enticing photos of the flora, fauna, and landscapes of each locality. However, the book fails to match the soaring rhetoric of Bangs’s introduction. Rather than focus on a more general description of what makes each place remarkable and how such journeys might enrich visitors, the detailed itineraries read like an extended catalogue for MT Sobek expeditions.
VERDICT Of limited use to travelers planning adventures.
