Thought leader Patrick-Goudreau (The Joyful Vegan) is passionate about her lifestyle, and it is easy to tell that she is well versed in vegan social issues. The weeks outlined here alternate among the three topics of the book’s subtitle, and each week is labeled with a distinctive symbol—for example, a bunny for cruelty-free. Almost two-thirds of the book consists of conversations around animals, with the rest discussing zero-waste living. The suggestions for each of the 52 weeks are well thought out, however, they may be overwhelming for newcomers to zero-waste or vegan living. Many weeks’ tasks cannot be accomplished in just seven days and will take much planning, especially for readers in remote areas. However, reading the book as “chapters” instead of “weeks” can help. The list of companies and websites at the end of the book is not all exclusive but is certainly useful.
VERDICT The amount of information makes this book better for readers who have already started their mindful journeys in vegan or zero-waste living. A useful shelf companion to vegan or plant-based cookbooks that will add to the conversation about making fewer animal protein choices.
