Now in its fourth decade, Burning Man calls itself a culture, not a festival, and recognizes 10 principles, including immediacy, radical inclusion, and self-expression. Raiser (In the Spirit of Napa Valley) updates her text from this book’s 2016 edition with over 150 new photographs by London and Erthal, documenting Burning Man’s breathtaking larger-than-life sculptures and Mutant Vehicles (or art cars). These seemingly gravity-defying constructions, photographed against stark blue Nevada desert skies or in the shadow of night, loom over Burners or are climbed upon by them. Captions contextualize the creations and provide information on the artists’ backgrounds.
VERDICT Fascinating, joyful, and awe-inspiring. Raiser’s text provides insight into the planning and detail that go into maintaining Burning Man’s integrity and safety while celebrating its spirit of creativity and participation.
