Al MacBharrais suffers from two curses. One curse causes everyone who hears his voice to violently loathe him; the other one kills his apprentices. Al mostly copes thanks to texting apps and not taking on any new apprentices, but he would really like to find out who cursed him and how to undo it. Enough is enough. Time to leverage his many years of experience with the fae and cross the globe with his remaining friends in search of answers. Maybe then Al can finally retire from being Brighid’s sigil agent and even reunite with his estranged family. Hearne includes a customized guide to Scottish terms, which is a helpful refresher for anyone who has come this far. He has a deft hand with language as he puts his characters into situations that can be both perilous and quite funny.
VERDICT This follow-up to Paper & Blood is a rewarding ending to the quirky trilogy, best read in order. Readers of Benedict Jacka or Stephen Blackmoore might enjoy.
