Organized alphabetically, this comprehensive accounting of terms, people, places, and concepts central to the contemporary study of Jesus and the gospels of the New Testament contains entries that each span several pages. The pieces offer a summary paragraph and, often, various subparagraphs that delve deeper into the concept. For example, under "Apostle" are meanings of the term, its use in the New Testament, descriptions of each of Jesus's disciples, and so forth. The entries are well organized, and each concept is well described. In its prefatory material, the dictionary contains a listing, several pages long, of abbreviations used throughout, transliteration of Hebrew and Greek terms, and an alphabetical listing of contributors, most of whom are published and have doctoral degrees. There are also several indexes, including one of scripture that cites the pages upon which various passages of both the Old and the New Testament appear, as well as the expected subject index.
VERDICT This dictionary will be valuable to college students, seminarians, and anyone else engaged in the contemporary study of Jesus, Christianity, and the Bible. Without engaging visuals, it is not as suitable for those who have only a general interest in these topics.
