London-based creativity start-up Zealous founder Armitage’s enthusiasm is contagious as he opens his book explaining how each person is creative and that creativity may have been squeezed out of us as we age. He lists the top misconceptions or lies people have heard about or believe about their creative selves and asks readers to review them, then cross out every lie they believe about their lack of creativity. This is just the first action step for readers to liberate themselves and rediscover their creativity. Armitage stresses the importance of “me time” and disconnecting from all things that distract from understanding who one is. He advocates silencing digital distractions and turning off social media and app notifications, and even deleting unnecessary apps altogether. Each chapter has an Action, an Aside, and a Recap. Actions include making a creativity schedule and then ripping it out of the book, and sitting in a large box just to think. The illustrations are basic but fun, and Armitage is genuinely funny.
VERDICT Unlocking creativity is possible after reading this book and implementing the actions.
