A snowstorm cripples Painters Mill, OH, where Amish and English live comfortably side by side. Police Chief Kate Burkholder gets a call from an Amish friend about an unconscious woman he found in a car on his property. Gina Colorosa used to be Kate’s bestie when they worked together on the Columbus police force. Kate saw Gina crossing certain lines and left the force before having to see Gina go down the wrong path. But Gina’s bad decisions have caught up with her, and now she begs Kate for protection. Not knowing how much she can trust Gina, Kate has her hide out with the family that found her. She also calls on her significant other, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation agent John Tomasetti, for help with this unwanted mess.
VERDICT Castillo’s 12th “Kate Burkholder” novel (after Shamed) is a suspenseful, culture-melding nail-biter mixing nonstop action, a timely plot, and street-tough dialog, delivering a gritty crime drama with a realistic look at the Amish lifestyle. Fans of the series and crime dramas à la Marta Perry and Lisa Gardner will find this hard to put down. [See Prepub Alert, 1/7/20.]
