DEBUT Originally self-published, Cole’s first book in the “Kindred’s Curse Saga” is now being traditionally published in a special hardcover edition. The Descended are the offspring of gods and have unique abilities coinciding with each of the nine realms they inhabit and rule over. Mortals are second-class citizens and frequent victims of the Descendeds’ cruelty and neglect. As a healer, Diem Bellator sees despair daily in Mortal City within the realm of Lumnos, where Descended can control light and shadows. Then Diem’s mother disappears, and once she stops taking the medication her mother prescribed, strange things begin to happen. When Diem attends the King in his final days, she meets the powerful and arrogant heir presumptive, Prince Luther Corbois, who causes her to feel uncomfortable things. Diem realizes everyone around her is harboring secrets, but she must also face the truth about herself.
VERDICT With detailed worldbuilding, a brooding and troubled anti-hero, and a heroine with a strong backbone struggling between duty to family, love, and all mortalkind, this epic, slow-burn romantasy is a page-turner for romance and fantasy fans alike. Highly recommended, with excellent crossover appeal for young adults.
