Comic-book industry maven Johnson (
The Amazing Spider-Man: Web-Slinger, Hero, Icon;
Captain America: Avenger, Hero, Icon) turns his attention to the brain vs. brawn conflicts of Bruce Banner and Hulk—the alter ego Dr. Banner can’t live without. Organized generally by traits (incredible; rampaging; immortal) and then chronologically, the book starts with a gray (rather than green) Hulk’s 1962 comic-book debut, followed by detailed storylines including Red Hulk, Hulk in Hell, and Indestructible Hulk. Hundreds of eye-popping illustrations document Hulk’s adventures, complete with rippling muscles, outsize mayhem, occasional dismemberments, and exclamations of “Whammmmm!,” “Sploosh!,” and the classic “Smaaasshh!”
VERDICT Hulk’s appearance in the Avengers movies and his stand-alone popularity make this an appealing choice.
