Radio personality Quivers, Howard Stern's longtime cohost, was a serial Master Cleanse detoxer before she adopted a vegan diet. Her routine was to cleanse for 21 days, eat whatever she wanted for a while, then return to the Master Cleanse detox. She eventually discovered that the solution to her health woes lay in adhering to a vegan lifestyle that made her feel great. While much of the first half of the book is anecdotal, Quivers details the health problems connected with consuming meat, processed foods, and sugar, and she includes a healthy dose of skepticism of physicians and prescription medication. Encouraging readers to start their "vegucation" with a detox followed by an all plant-based diet, she offers recipes in the latter half of the book that focus on vegetables, soups, salads, grains, and sweets. Unfortunately, recipes don't include nutrient analyses.
VERDICT Conversational and funny, this book may inspire fans to try a juice fast or a vegan diet. The recipes feature fresh produce and aren't loaded with tofu or meat-substitute products, which may appeal to readers who might be turned off from veganism by unfamiliar ingredients.
