Amara is seeking a fresh start after escaping her suffocating family of origin. She moves to the colony of New Belaforme, where her wife Vinh has landed a position as head of security; there, their friend Jesse researches the biology of the trio’s new home. But the planet has a secret weapon—whenever the ecology goes out of balance, the planet stages a mass die-off to right things. When a rival colony attacks New Belaforme, the scales of that balance are tipped, as is the precarious balance in the relationship between Amara, Vinh, and Jesse. The planet will take care of its human pests the way it always does, but it might have found a kindred poisonous spirit in these particular humans—if they’re willing to watch the rest of their species burn. The entire novel is a taut, twisted countdown to destruction.
VERDICT Readers will find themselves thrilled and chilled by this planet-based monster tale from Ashing-Giwa (The Splinter in the Sky) that will appeal to readers who like sci-fi horror, such as Ghost Station by S.A. Barnes and the creepiest parts of Cassandra Khaw’s eldritch worldbuilding.
