1000 Vampires on Screen, Vol. 1: A–J

Most horror fans agree that vampires are the sexiest monsters on the big and the small screen. Bacon’s (Vampires from Another World) two-volume reference offers biographies and plotlines for 1,000 vampires appearing in films, TV series, miniseries, and even failed TV pilots. The two volumes cover 126 years of on-screen vampires, from 1896’s The House of the Devil to 2022’s Morbius. The entries are listed alphabetically by the vampire’s first name (A–J in Volume 1; K–Z in Volume 2). Each entry lists the vampire character, gives their mini-biography, tells the actor or actress who portrayed them, the title and release year of the film or TV series they inhabit, and, most helpful, the names of other vampires they interact with. Thankfully, the volumes offer extensive and helpful indexes, one for titles and the other for actors/directors. These benefit readers when 17 screen appearances and actors, including Jack Palance, Rutger Hauer, and Adam Sandler are listed under “Dracula,” and 33 entertainers, such as Bela Lugosi, Christopher Lee, Leslie Nielson, and Gary Oldman, are listed under “Count Dracula.” The second half of these volumes contains nearly 40 interviews with actors, directors, and writers, including Catherine Hardwicke, Neil Jordan, Michael Rymer, Doug Jones, Anna Silk, and scream queen Debbie Rochon.
