Psychologist Schaeffer (applied psychology, New York Univ.) debuts with a brief and easy-to-read overview of the symptoms of panic attacks that also includes a variety of exercises to help one calm down after a panic attack or even eliminate panic attacks altogether. The book doesn’t need to be read front to back but can be employed as a quick resource based on individual needs. Each chapter follows an established pattern, clearly conveying the core information. Many of the exercises are variations on a theme, allowing readers to use a combination of approaches to suit their particular situation. Schaeffer occasionally drops in tech and pop culture references, making for a playful and comfortable read. Several of his examples concern patients who experienced panic attacks related to the pandemic, a topic that will resonate with many readers. Schaeffer’s work might also be helpful for people who don’t personally suffer from panic attacks but could benefit from a toolkit to help others and be more aware of what panic can look like.
VERDICT An excellent little volume that offers a big punch of ideas. Great for all psychology and self-help collections.
